The FEMP is committed to a sustainability strategy under CONAMA10
The President of the Network of Local Governments for Biodiversity FEMP, Maria Antonia Perez has proposed to define together with the Government a comprehensive strategy to implement initiatives for the conservation of natural resources that enhance the natural heritage, use sound water and preservation of habitats and at the same time enable the municipalities to develop local policies to combat climate change.
Maria Antonia Perez spoke at the inauguration of the 4th Local Towns and Cities for Sustainability takes place under CONAMA10, along with the Mayor of Santander and Vice President of the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate, Iñigo de la Serna, and Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Projects of the Ministry of Development, Beatriz Corredor.
The President's council of Guadalajara said the impetus of the Strategy would be possible through the collaborative framework stable and permanent than FEMP has with the Government through the Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs. The support of this ministry, he pointed out has been crucial to the creation and consolidation of the Network of Local Governments for Biodiversity and the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate, and enabled both networks have become a benchmark national and international cooperation in the fight against climate change and increasing biodiversity.
Currently the Spanish Network of Cities for Climate has 297 local bodies representing about 28 million, and the Network of Local Governments for Biodiversity with 228, representing about 23 million people.
Maria Antonia Perez argued later, that solutions to environmental problems are necessarily tied to adoption of related policies, in which issues such as sustainability, rationality and protection of natural values are present in all areas municipal management and all areas of decision making. Similarly, he spoke of the importance of networking, with common and coordinated policies, and the necessary contribution of Local Governments in the process of transformation towards sustainability of our towns and cities.
Sustainable Cities
The President of the Network of Local Governments for Sustainability was also involved then a debate on cities and sustainability, along with other representatives from various Spanish cities. In this forum, put in value the work that local governments are doing to improve urban spaces, protect resources and improve the quality of life of its inhabitants, regardless of size and location of the municipalities.
In particular, he referred to the local policies on urban mobility incorporating the variable of sustainability, commitment to renewable energy and energy efficiency savings. He highlighted the work of optimizing the use of water resources and development of sustainable waste management to minimize possible to generate emissions of greenhouse gases in our municipalities.
