The Princes of Asturias deliver the distinctive Cities of Science and Innovation


Their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess of Asturias, accompanied by the Third Vice-President and Minister of Territorial Policy and Public Administration, Manuel Chaves, and the Minister of Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia, presided the ceremony of the distinctive "Cities of Science and Innovation "obtained for 30 municipalities.



During the ceremony, Don Felipe has said that the crisis has shown that companies who choose the innovation can better overcome the difficult economic times. Thus, noted that "no city can strive for environmental sustainability, economic and social, without integrating science, development and innovation." Similarly, has highlighted the cultural prosperity and international prestige as other important aspects to the cities, which makes the commitment to R & D.

He highlighted that the economic crisis has driven the shift towards a new production model based on innovation and capable of securing "a true knowledge economy that fosters wealth creation and employment generation."

For Prince, the recognition of science cities can "remember that the Spanish creativity in recent decades in scientific terms is expressed throughout the geography" of the country. However, he noted that Spain "has to continue growing in both planes, knowing that the scientific and technical research actively influences the production processes in markets and in the daily life of urban centers."

For his part, Minister for Science and Innovation has wanted to congratulate the winners for "bet on the R & D" with "an attitude of change and progress." In this regard pointed out that the 30 cities have recognized "known to bet on the future" and has spoken to the mayors to recognize their decision to "anticipate the needs of the city and citizens." "The work of the winners shows that innovation is a way forward and that everyone can follow," he concluded.

The Third Vice-President and Minister for Regional Policy, Manuel Chaves, has highlighted the Government's work in this sector as "way to strengthen local policy from the competitiveness of the economy." He asserted that the city is the first public space shared by the citizens and the best global and connects with the real needs of people. The winning sites, which in the next three years will be part of the Pulse network, and will have benefits in the policy framework for R + D + i, are divided into three categories: up to 20,000 inhabitants, between 20,000 and 100,000 inhabitants, more than 100,000 inhabitants, with ten winners in each of them.

The distinctive "City of Science and Innovation" recognizes the significant effort and commitment that local councils have been playing with R & D + i and the contribution from the local to the change in the production model.

A mayor of each group have participated as speakers of other winners, highlighting, all the effort they have made toward meeting ls its purpose and importance of innovation for economic development.

Mayor Boiro, Xosé Deira, who thanked the award on behalf of the group of smaller municipalities, said it is the responsibility of the Administration to promote innovation projects that promote job creation and improve working conditions.

For its part, the Mayor of Cáceres, Carmen Heras, representing the award-winning group of cities between 20,001 and 100,000, highlighted the need and responsibility of the cities to seek answers to the challenges of the Spanish economy from the point sosteniibilidad of view, job creation and quality of life of its inhabitants, and that these responses can only be found in innovation and scientific research, to which must be oriented urban development.

In this first edition, has been awarded the distinction to those municipalities that have demonstrated a greater commitment to innovative projects from the State Fund for Employment and Local Sustainability. The evaluation of candidates has also involved the collaboration of the Ministry of Land Policy.
The investments made by municipalities in R + D + i under the Fund managed by the Ministry of Planning Policy totaled EUR 916 million distributed over a total of 7,650 projects (30.1% of total projects .)

10 municipalities were selected from each of the three categories according to their number of inhabitants (less than 20,000, from 20,001 to 100,000 and more than 100,000).
