The FEMP hosts the workshop Tools for the integration of biodiversity into municipal policies
The Director of the Biodiversity Foundation, Ana Leiva, President of the Local Government Network + 2010 Biodiversity and the Diputación Provincial de Jaén, Felipe Lopez, and Secretary General of the Federation FEMP, Isaura Leal, today launched in Federation's headquarters in Madrid, the workshop "Tools for mainstreaming biodiversity in municipal policies."
This is the third of four workshops that are taking place between March and April, with the aim of providing local councils with the task of the nomination contest "Capital of Biodiversity", organized by the Foundation for Biodiversity and framed within the LIFE + project "European Capital of Biodiversity", in which the Local Government Network + 2010 Biodiversity FEMP participates and collaborates.
The competition "Capital of Biodiversity", whose nominations in four categories (according to the amount of population of each municipality), is open until 30 April, aims to protect the natural heritage in the Spanish municipalities through the promotion of conservation initiatives.
In this regard, the workshops give local managers the tools to start or intensify their efforts for the protection of biodiversity. At the Madrid meeting involved over 70 people and represented more than 30 different autonomous municipalities.
Designed specifically for local authorities, mayors, department directors, technicians and experts with direct responsibility for decision making, the agenda of the workshop addresses the integration of biodiversity protection regulations and instruments in municipal planning, design of measures for the conservation and protection of biodiversity, communication techniques to conduct awareness campaigns and financing instruments for local initiatives to protect biodiversity.
During the day in Madrid and the next and last, to be held in Gandia on April 19, provide details on the characteristics and requirements for participation in the "Capital of Biodiversity." That is, will be addressed in a personalized way to the municipalities that are interested in participating in the contest.
Pilot
The contest is part of the LIFE + project "European Capital of Biodiversity", has a budget of 1.6 million euros and is financed by the European Commission by 50 percent.
This is a pilot project which will be held simultaneously in five countries. Those responsible for its development are the Biodiversity Foundation, Spain, the German Association for Environmental Protection (DUH), the Regional Environmental Center (REC), of Slovakia, the French Regional Agency for Nature and Biodiversity NatureParif , the Office of Coordination and Development of the Lake Balaton (LBDCA), Hungary, and at European level, the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and the Regional Office of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN .)
Through this contest, will assess the measures implemented municipalities for the proper conservation of biodiversity through their responses on five aspects: green spaces, planning instruments for the protection of biodiversity, biodiversity in agriculture , forests and inland waters, organization, cooperation and awareness, and monitoring of biodiversity. In this edition of the contest will give priority to green spaces, so that questions relating to this subject will obtain more points.

The deadline for submitting the documentation is April 30, 2010, and shall be sent to the Biodiversity Foundation, either through e-mail address capitaldelabiodiversidad@fundacion-biodiversidad.es, or by regular mail to the address C / Fortuny, 7, 28010 Madrid, stating "Capital of Biodiversity Competition."
