Municipalities in the periphery claim their status as living spaces and sustainable economic development agents
The peripheral municipalities believe they have overcome their status as "dormitory towns" dependent on large cities and towns claim their status as consolidated, with levels of infrastructure and services capable of ensuring a better quality of life for its inhabitants. So they are willing to reinforce its policies in the field of sustainability, mobility, equality, the right to housing, health and democratic governance.
As stated by the Mayor of Getafe and Chairman of the FEMP, Pedro Castro, at the opening of the Second Forum of Local Authorities of the periphery that has started in this city of Madrid in the framework of the agenda of meetings of the Spanish Presidency European Union.
In his speech, Pedro Castro has announced that this forum will get a reference document for the global debate on values and the rights of the peripheral cities, which highlights the nature of solidarity locations, and agents are essential for social and economic development sustainable.
Elaborating on this idea, says it is at times more difficult when local councils take on more importance as tools to help overcome the crisis "as the comet, that the wind blows stronger, the higher ups." He also put Getafe and Technology Park as an example of what can cities do for economic development and employment.
In the opening ceremony also intervened, the Government Delegate in Madrid, Amparo Valcarce, the Rector of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Daniel Peña, Secretary General of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions, Fréderic Vallier , First Vice-Executive of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, Antonio Balmón, Mayor of Nanterre (France), Patrick Jarry, and the Director of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation, Elena Madrazo.
Getafe's meeting brings together mayors and local representatives of more than 20 countries on five continents, to discuss topics as diverse as climate change, equal opportunities, promotion of public services, participatory and sustainable models or different forms of governance.
Pedro Castro referred to the Multilevel Governance, "in which the proximity of the Local Government becomes an added value to ensure the success and effectiveness of public policies, and a new scenario in which we become peripheral cities privileged spaces for responding to many questions. "
The Mayor hosted the meeting said the aim is to build solidarity metropolis, with a stake in new economic models based on sustainability, and this revealed that some of the main action in the peripheral cities, including policies are active inclusion, the resurgence of public spaces, promoting the culture of peace or the efficient use of resources to build more equitable and multicultural societies.
In the Second Forum of Local Authorities of the periphery that has started in Getafe will be discussed issues such as climate challenge, the importance of equal opportunities, empowerment of women, citizens' initiatives, the promotion of public services, participatory and sustainable models, the importance of youth education, peace in the multicultural society as a basis for coexistence or forms of governance.
