Spanish mayors, Israelis and Palestinians, for peace in Middle East
The President of the FEMP, Pedro Castro held a meeting today with Israeli and Palestinian mayors in which they valued the opportunity to promote joint action at local level with the European objective to promote Middle East peace
The proposal has come from the mayors of Gilboa (Israel), Daniel Attar, and Jenin (Palestine), Qaddoura Mousa, which have long been working hard to improve the living conditions of their populations and to foster a spirit of peace and tolerance in order to relaunch the peace process in the Middle East.
The FEMP shares the importance of the work of local and regional authorities in the work of peace building, to be precisely the entities closest to the population and is committed to supporting these initiatives for lasting peace in the region, as part of its strategy of external action, both under the Diplomacy of cities, as in the section will be forthcoming within the FEMP of Mayors for Peace in Spain.
The initiative to promote this joint action at local level in Europe is part of the close cooperation in this matter between Spain, Israel and Palestine.
Therefore, the FEMP in the national foster the commitment of Spanish Local Governments to peace in the Middle East and is committed to providing this in the framework of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), which is integrated the Federation and Spanish section, to achieve local consensus and support in Europe as an important initiative is to promote peace in the Middle East.
In this sense, Pedro Castro, has invited the mayors of Gilboa and Jenin to participate in the Local Authorities Forum to be held next June in Getafe and has proposed holding a conference in two cities with the participation of Mayors Spanish, Palestinians and Israelis, as part of the Alliance of Civilizations initiative of United Nations
